ShireBiz Newsletter

Welcome (especially to new ShireBiz members), to our initial newsletter. As you are no doubt aware ShireBiz is your business & community lobby group dedicated to creating employment & opportunities in Sutherland Shire & Southern Sydney. We also provide a portal for business to each level of Government.

ShireBiz has just enjoyed its second birthday having formed as a result of a public meeting held in October 2012. Your Committee of current & retired business professionals & retired political figures of each mainstream political party meets monthly with sub committees & Executive meetings held more frequently.

One of the first requests from local business & the community was for us to investigate & report on parking & traffic problems within the Shire. This required us to initiate a survey which was completed recently & the online data received compiled in report form. As a direct result of this survey ShireBiz can report that Sutherland Council (SSC) has commenced trials of marked car parking spaces in Cronulla. We are confident that as a result of the success of these trials the process will be put in use Shire wide resulting in both more parking spaces & more efficient use of the space available.Following representations by local M.P.’s Speakman & Evans) ShireBiz met with the Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP to present our survey results on the concept of peak hour shuttle buses operating within the Shire from railway stations/transport hubs..ShireBiz believes that shuttle bus trials will be undertaken in the Shire.-we will keep you posted.

In October ShireBiz held its first Forum which was on Advanced Manufacturing-the keynote Speaker was the Hon Bob Balwyn- Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry. Speakers for manufacturing & from academia impressed & paved the way for a series of follow up workshops to be held in the New Year.

Two days before our Forum the Prime Minister announced Federal Govt support & funding for initiatives in support of the very areas championed by ShireBiz. Of special note was reference to the removal/amendment of legislation & regulations that impeded manufacturing –the example quoted –NICNAS-was the subject of direct representation by ShireBiz.

ShireBiz has accepted the Prime Minister’s invitation to provide business input into the White Paper on Tax Reform due for completion in late 2015. Early next year ShireBiz will run a series of workshops covering taxes, regulatory costs/imposts etc imposed by the three levels of Government on business. Around mid year we will host a larger forum for final business input. The Prime Minister has been invited to keynote this event entitled “What’s Holding Back Your Business ?”.

ShireBiz  is the southern node of the Advanced Manufacturing CRC (AMCRC) & is developing working relationships with research bodies such as ANSTO/CSIRO & Universities including University of Western Sydney; University of Wollongong; UTS; etc. We intend including TAFE colleges.

Shortly we will seek sponsorship funding for our website. Such funding will (combined with membership fees) allow us to employ a (part time) secretary to ensure we communicate with all in an efficient manner.

We invite you to contribute with your knowledge of issues but more importantly give us your ideas on the projects undertaken. Simply put your advice in an email & forward it to myself or Tony Blain or through the website (currently being upgraded) .
